May '99 - Michael's 325 Liter Planted Tank.
One of the most desired effects when aquascaping a planted tank is the striking contrast resulting of a beautiful red plant on a green planted frame. It's not an easy achievement though, since red plants are in general the most difficult to keep. This effect is very well represented in May's "dutch tank", owned by German hobbyist Michael Simek. Although the entire aquascaping is very well done, what immediately catches the eye is the awesome Red Lotus on the middle right.
The tank is 130x50x50 cm, or 325 liters. It has an EHEIM 2228 and biological filtering in the ground (groundheating). Lighting consists of 3 OSRAM LumiluxPlus Daylight 36W/11, one from 12-14 PM, two fom 14-16 PM and three from 16-22 PM. CO2 supply is regulated with a DENNERLE PH-Controller and Reactor Cyclo 500, 60
bubbles/minute, and the gravel contains laterite for the plants.
Michael does water changes every 10 days, using 50 liter osmose water (RO) and 20 liter from the house waterline.
Typical water parameters are pH 6.4 in the morning, 6.7 in the evening, KH 2-3, GH 6, nitrite 0, nitrate 10. The aquascaping was made with Echinodorus spec. grisebachii, Echinodorus bolivianus, Echinodorus bleheri, Echinodorus 'little bear', Anubias barteri, Cryptocoryne undulatus red, Cryptocoryne cordata, Cryptocoryne beckettii, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Aponogeton crispus, Cabomba palaeformis, Nymphea lotus red, Nymphea lotus green, Vallisneria americana and Vesicularia dubyana. Fish population consists of 5 Ancistrus spec. RED, 4 Ancistrus hoplogenys, 8 Paracheirodon axelrodi, 4 Microgeophagus ramirezi, 3 Sturisoma panamese, 7 Corydoras sterbai, 6 Corydoras adolfoi, 3 Epiplatys dageti and 8 Nannostomus marginatus.
