October '98 - Mauricio's 12 liter Mini Aquarium.
As simple as it gets! After showing so many huge and elaborate tanks in the past months, I thought it was time to demonstrate how easy it can be to set up a really nice, small, inexpensive tank. Mauricio P. Chagas is a great personal friend, member of my old college gang, who's also been an aquarium hobbyist since he was a kid. This particular tank was set up in his study room in Jan '98. It has less than 12 liters (35x16x21 c.c.), is filtered only by a UGF with a small air pump, and lighted by an 11 W compact daylight fluorescent bulb. The decoration is made of a single rock, several Vallisneria spiralis in the background, a Samolus parviflorus on the right and some unknown little grass on the front. Population consists of 5 Zebra Danios, 5 Serpae Tetras, 2 Oto's and a Cory Cat. Setting up a tank like this shouldn't cost more than US$40.00. However, it's important to keep in mind that small tanks like this do require frequent monitoring and maintenance by the owner, since water parameters will be much more variable than in larger tanks. Mauricio also maintains a nice 60 liter Angelfish Tank, that will be portrayed in a future Tank of the Month.
