January '12 - Chris & Kari Bond's 470 L African Cichlid Aquarium. (USA)

Calling all African cichlid keepers! In the 13 years of existence of this section we've featured about 100 aquariums with these amazing fish, but we haven't received any submissions of mature African cichlid tanks in quite a while, so don't be shy and send in your tank photos! To help give a little push we're featuring a nice setup showing very happy, healthy adult mbunas that was submitted several years ago, but hadn't been selected yet because there was no full tank photo and contact with the owner has been lost.

I believe it's very important for us to represent all the different styles of fishkeeping in this section, so let this "call" go out not only to the African lovers, but to all fishkeepers - freshwater, marine and pond - who own uncommon, notable and/or exemplary setups of any kind...send them in! :-)

Owner:Chris & Kari Bond, 52 & 33, from Ringgold (USA), 11 years of fishkeeping.
Setup:June 2002.
Dimensions:182x46x61 cm.
Volume: 470 L (nominal), 335 L (effective).
Filtration:4x Marineland H.O.T. Magnum Pro.
Lighting:4x110 W VHO Icecap 600, 8.5 hours/day.
Heating: 300 W Ebo Jager.
Substrate:8 cm layer of crushed coral.
Decoration:90 kg of Lace Rock and assorted driftwood.
Water:Temp 26C, pH 8.2.
Maintenance:Water changes once every month, about 40% with Seachem Malawi Cichlid Salts added.
Fauna: Mixture of African Malawi Cichlids, and 1 Rhino Pleco.
Flora: Java fern.
Comments:This has been as close to a "bullet proof" tank as I have ever seen. Maintenance is minimal and the fish remain calm due to the amount of cover they have available. One recommendation for anyone that is considering African Cichlids. When you are ready to add fish to your tank, do it when you change the water. Re-arrange your rock formations so the hiding areas in the tank are new for ALL of the fish. This will prevent your established fish from attacking the new ones to defend their territory.
