December '08 - Oli Gunnarsson's 900 L American Cichlid Aquarium. (Iceland)
The large, beautiful, personable, predatorial, territorial and aggressive cichlids from South to North America are among the most abused fish in our hobby. Sadly, all those qualities that make them so interesting are the same that cause them to frequently end up in tiny, inappropriate aquarium setups, owned by pseudo-hobbyists are only concerned about how "cool" it is to own a fish like this, or worse yet, to pitch them up against each other (usually mere juveniles) and then brag about how Fish A beat up Fish B. Thankfully, some hobbyists can go beyond that inconsequential state of mind, and realize how even cooler it is to see this fish grow into the full size and personalities of adulthood, in properly sized tanks for them, where their territoriality and aggression in fact become much less of a concern. Here's a nice example by an seasoned hobbyist from Iceland!
