September '08 - Brad McAdam's 850 L Malawi Cichlid Aquarium. (USA)

For September we're back to featuring one of those really big and awesome Malawi cichlid tanks that are becoming more and more popular, as hobbyists realize the extremely attractive cost/benefit ratio of this type of aquarium setup. Enjoy!

Owner:Brad McAdam, 38, from New Orleans (USA), 4 years of fishkeeping.
Setup:January 2006.
Dimensions:183x61x76 cm (Perfecto 225G)
Volume: 850 L (nominal).
Filtration:ProClear Model 300 Professional Series wet/dry sump (90 L).
Lighting:3x60 W actinics (one blue and two white).
Heating:2x Aqua-Clear 300 W heaters.
Substrate:88 kg of fine sandblasting sand.
Decoration:All lace rocks.
Others:A Mag-Drive Supreme 12 pump is located behind the rocks for extra circulation.
Fauna:Yellow labs, aceis, red zebras, red empresses, O.B. peacocks, venustus, fryeri, blue dolphin cichlids, numerous fry hiding in the rocks, and an assortment of other non-Malawi species.

The lace rock was rearranged numerous times until I found the look I liked. The rock took two months to completely set up. I added a little at a time and it is very, very secure despite how it may look. The aquarium bug bit me bad. I started out with a 450 L and six months later I purchased this 850 L. The 450 was sold shortly after and was replaced with a new 1060 L.
