March '08 - "True Reef" - George Gogescu's 430 L Reef Aquarium. (Romania)

This month we feature an amazingly beautiful and well photographed reef aquarium! Enjoy the photos, but also pay special attention to the detailed equipment list used in this high-tech, heavily stocked setup. It definitely takes a lot of research, preparation and money to put a high-end setup like this together, and here is an interesting example where the owner chooses make things a little easier by going almost entirely with a single brand (in this case, Aqua Medic).

Owner:George Gogescu, 31, from Bucharest (Romania), 8 years of fishkeeping.
Setup:April 2007.
Dimensions:120x60x60 cm with overflow box and wave box in the back corners.
Volume: 432 L (nominal).
Filtration:Aqua Medic Turboflotor 1000 Multi SL protein skimmer; wet/dry DIY sump based in Aqua Medic stand: 2x 15x15x40 cm mechanical filtration with sponge media, 2x 15x15x50 cm biological filtration with bioballs.
Circulation:Aqua Medic Ocean Runner OR3500 from sump to aquarium, Ocean Runner PH2500 for wavemaking, Ocean Runner Power Filter PF1000.
Electronics:Aqua Medic pH Computer, in combination with CO2 bottle, regulator, M-ventil, counter, calcium reactor KR1000, pH Sensor Short. Automatically top up evaporated water with Niveaumat SP3000.
Lighting:Aqua Medic Ocean Light 150 plus (2x150 W MH 10000 K, 2x54 W T5 actinic blue).
Substrate:About 4-5 cm of coral sand fine by Aquarium Systems.
Decoration:About 50 kg of dry base rock and 5 kg of Kenya live rock.
Others:Aqua Medic Calcium Reactor KR1000 and Kalkwasser Stirrer KS1000, UV-C 18 W, Titan 250 Chiller, 300 W heater.
Water:Temp 26.5-27.5C, pH 8.0-8.2, Ca about 400 ppm, specific gravity 1.024.
Stocking RO Water:2x300 L plastic reservoirs, reverse osmosis Premium Line 150, solenoid ", booster pump, manometer, Aqua Medic Aquaniveau with 2 switches to fill level of water in reservoirs.
Maintenance:Every week change calc., 1 ampoule of Reef Booster, Biodigest, Stopammo, Stronti+, Iodi+, Bioptim. Change 30 L of water. I use Reef Crystal salt and RO water. Feeding: 2/week Artemia from culture, 1/week Artemia frozen, 2/day micro pellets (Hikari), 1/day Sea Veggies green, purple or red (Julian Sprung).
Fauna:Fish: 2x Pseudochromis fridmani, 1x Pseudochromis paccagnellae, 1x Zebrasoma flavescens, 2x Paracanthurus hepatus, 1x Chrysiptera parasema, 1x Ecsenius bicolor, 2x Synchiropus ocellatus, 1x Pseudanthias tuka, 1x Pseudanthias pleurotaenia, 1x Pseudanthias bicolor, 1x Pseudanthias squamipinnis. Invertebrates: 1x Tridacna maxima, 2x Linkia laevigata 'blue star', 1x Linkia laevigata 'red star', 4x Lysmata debelius, 2x Lysmata grabhami.
Corals:Hard: Euphyllia glabrescens, Euphyllia ancora, Euphyllia hammer, Goniopora sp., Gallaxea fascicualaris, Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, Favia sp., Heliofungia sp., Turbinaria peltata, Cataphyllia jardinei. Soft: many species of Zoanthus, Clavularia and Discosoma, Lobophytum sp., Sinualria sp., Cladiella sp., Capnella sp., Sarcophyton sp., Anthellia sp., Xenia sp., Ricordea sp., and others.
