October '04 - Diogo Lopes's 300 L Reef Aquarium. (Portugal)

The Portuguese aquarist Diogo Lopes is an Advisor in our Discussion Forum (Brazilian version), and for some years now has been inspiring and helping other participants with his great discussions and very creative photos. So it's only fair to show here this month his most relevant personal achievement, which is this beautiful 300 liter reef tank. Dimensions:100x50x60 cm
Volume: 300 L (nominal)
Filtration:120 kg Fiji Live Rock; 120 L Sump (80 L effective); Eheim 2228 Canister Filter with ceramics and resins, Tunze 230/3 skimmer
Circulation:Main Pump Eheim 3500 L/h; 1 Interior circulation pump 1000 L/h behind the live rock wall to avoid deposition of waste; 1 Interior circulation pump 1000 L/h to create a counter-current against the water coming from the sump; Rena 200 L/h pump for the UV tube; 600 L/h pump for the chiller.
Refrigeration:Chiller Teco CA-240 (outside the sump due to its dimensions
Heating:JBL 300 W heater (rarely turns on)
Lighting:2x150 W HQI´s 14000 K + 2x30 W Actinic Florescents + 1 Aquamedic Moonlight
Substrate:2-3 cm layer of coral fragments covered by 4-5 cm of Aragmax
Others:UV Rena 18 W (4 hours/day), PHScan and ORPScan from Eutech Instruments,
Water:Temp 25°C, Dens. 1022-1025, pH 8.2-8.4, KH 9, Ca 420-450 ppm, Mg 1500 ppm, NO2 0, NO3 3-4 ppm, PO4 0.1 ppm, Redox Pot. 320 mV

Maintenance:Daily water fill (about 2 L) with addition of kalkwasser; Weekly change (about 15%) with Aquatec UO-60 RO water and addition of Instant Ocean salt. Addition of Ecosystem Aquarium Reef Solution every week; Red Sea Iodine 3x per week; Red Sea Coralgro every week; Trace Elements, Strontium and Molibdenum every month.
