Having set up my very first aquarium at eight years of age, the first thing I wanted to know at the time was when I could get a shark. My parents did not take me seriously until trip to the local aquarium dealer, where the first thing I showed them were the Bala and Ruby Sharks.
Subsequently, they bought me my own pair of Bala Sharks and a Ruby Shark, which lived alongside other fish peacefully for the next two and a half years.
Late one afternoon, I was changing the water and rearranging the tank. When trying to capture one of the now 20 cm long Bala's, it evaded my net, sped to the other end of the tank and jumped three metres, only to impale itself slightly on a mechano set my brother had been building.
I scooped it up and put it back in the tank. Unfortunately it was dead by morning.
