A truly beautiful clam that many reef hobbyists aspire to keep. It does have high light requirements and should only be used with Metal Halide or modern high output lights. Needs clean water and will not tolerate nippy fish that bother their mantle.

Make sure you keep your calcium and pH high. Best kept with SPS corals, as their light demand is similar. Either use a calcium reactor (easier), or drip Kalkwasser. Most definitely use MH lighting (duel 250 W, 10,000 K is a good choice). Pretty hardy with the right conditions, and keep a 6 line wrasse (P. hexataenia) for control of a tiny molluscan parasite that will eventually kill the Tridacna. Don't keep angels of any kind with giant clams. All angels are omnivorous foragers of the reef and will eventually start nipping at the mantle of the clams. These clams will reduce the level of nitrate and phosphate in your tank, and are a great addition to your live rock biological filter.
