Name: Dicrossus filamentosus
Origin: Amazon Basin
This is quite a shy fish, and is happier when kept in soft, acid water. Mine is often swimming around rocks and the bases of plants, but will always dash up when I'm feeding live foods.
Nice, peaceful dwarf cichlid. Requires a place or places to hide and will get along well with any other peaceful cichlid or schooling fish.
Not an easy fish to keep because of demands on water quality (MUST be nitrate free, soft and acid), but otherwise a lovely little gem and hardy. Breeds quite easily when water conditions are to it's liking. The pair guard the eggs which are laid on bogwood (books say leaves of aquatic plants, but mine preferred bogwood). The female is a good parent and can be a bit aggressive when protecting young, like Nannacara anomala. Fry are not easy to rear in my experience, perhaps because they are so sensitive to water chemistry.
