forgive me if this has been asked/answered befor but I couldnt help noticing the umlout (spl?) above the o. is that the correct spelling? I'm in german so that would be koei or somthing if german rules aplied.

The japanese word for carp is コイ which in romaji becomes ko I. Hence, Koi.

It's not a phonetic spelling. It's a direct romanization of the kana. I'm not so hot on the linguistics, so the accent might be there to try and correct the pronunciation a little bit. But the convention is not to have any accents on the romanization, unless it's a long vowel (ie コーイ). Which it's not in this case.
