I have a 10 gal tank that I use to put baby guppies in after they are born. It's a very simple setup with a bare bottom, a small amount of java moss and a sponge filter.

Its been set up for quite some time, 6 months or more. Everything was running fine until a couple of weeks ago I noticed the water turning really green and cloudy. I've had tanks for 15 years and I've never seen green water!

Can the sponge filters cause this?

It's just algae, and actually, for baby guppies, it's perfect. Very good first food. Daphnia would clean it up in a few days, or less light, but I'd just leave it, for your purposes.
