Goldfish are very messy, and they are quite massive, so many people recommend 10-20 gallons each per large goldfish. For juvenile goldfish, I'd still say no more than 3, because they will grow very quickly, and I would only get 3 if I planned to move them to a pond or large tank later.

If your lucky, 2 small fancy goldfish. The problem is goldfish really are messy Smile , so a very good filter is recommended, and weekly water changes. I helped a mate keep 2 in his 20G, but make sure you can add some fast growing plant, like elodea. That will help to use up some of the access 'nutrients' Wink .

May I ask what equipment you'll have for this tank?

One would probably be the best as far as bioload goes, but goldfish do like companions. If you want more fish, perhaps look into some other kinds of fish out there!

This all depends on what equip you got though.

Goldfish should not be mixed with other types of fish, even the different types of goldfish should not be mixed. Keep bubble-eyes with bubble eyes, or telescope eyes. Keep short bodied fan tails with short bodied goldfish. Keep long fins with long fins. This is because the fancy fish are so very handicapped but theie special traits that they cannot compete well with other faster fish. If you have common slim bodied single tailed goldfish, you probably will need a bigger tank to keep even 2, for they can reach 12 inches long, they are very fast and need swimming room. 4 to 5 feet long is good for them if possible!

No plecos or otos or other algae eaters, no catfish, no tropical fish. Just goldfish. The plecos and other suckermouth fish will eventually latch onto the goldfish in the night as the algae level gets low -- round injuries and lost scales followed by bacterial or parasite attacks then death. The shrimp or catfish are likely to end up as lunch for goldfish are like little babies, everything goes into the mouth. Anyhow, you don't need an algae eater, just scrape the glass after the water change and the goldfish will happily suck up the algae -- they love green things.
