Can regular old beach sand be cleaned and used as substrate? If so can you tell me how to clean it.

I'm not really sure if regular beach sand is reccommended since it can contain stuff you may not want. Like from acid rain or pollutants. Some people that collect natural sea water for there tank go farther out to get it and don't collect it from the shore itself becase the polllutants are less when you go farther out . Maby you can do this for the sand. But you can buy a dry aragonite sand also pretty cheap from stores like home depot, and seed it with live sand.
