I saw a while back a topic concerning canister filters emptying a tank if it breaks or a line becomes detatched. Instead of putting a hole in your filter tubing use an overflow box like you would for a wet-dry. You should be able to buy plexiglass and make one putting slits in the top to allow the water to drain into the intake of your canister filter tube. This also will allow the dirty water on the surface to be collected instead of the water in the bottom colomn of the tank. Just make sure you keep your return up above the water level of the intake slits of your overflow otherwise a failure could let that side of the system drain the tank as well. If you want you could also use a large sponge such as the ones for the hagen aqua-clear back filters inside your overflow box as a prefilter for your canister filter. Just make a hole in the middle of the sponge and insert the end of the intake tube into it. And remember, like any filter using an overflow, watch your water level! Have fun!
