I went to a trusted LFS and bought a female betta. Added her to my planted 10 gal with 7 Black Neon Tetras and 2 female guppies (not yet full grown). After a few hours the "female" betta began chasing all of my other fish!! I have moved "her" to a half-gallon and am waiting to decide what to do next. This makes me wonder if its a young male betta or a crown-tail betta (so it looks like a female but might be a male). I thought a female betta would be fine in my tank!! HELP!

I may take the betta back and get another "female" and see what happens... or I might use the "female" betta to start cycling my new 5 gal long. Suggestions? How can I sex this betta? I have another betta in a one gallon that is certainly male so I could test them together? This new "female" hasn't made a buggle nest but its only been one night and it was a very active night so maybe "he" hasn't had time to make bubbles?

Check for an ovipositor behind and between the ventral fins. It should be relatively easy to spot. If there is nothing there, you have, it's a male.

I have heard that some betta females can be just as aggressive and territorial as males. I guess it just depends on the fish's personality.
