hey this is just a quite question, I know some of you would say just research it, I have researched about cycling, and researched well, but I was wondering if someone could tell me if it is possible to cycle without fish WITHOUT adding ammonia into the tank every so often, and if it is, how long roughly to cycle a 10g, with 10% water changes everyday.
Thank you in advance.

Barney, I haven't tried it, but I have read that in the earliest days of the "fishless cycle" introduction people would cycle their tanks by adding fish food or cut up shrimp/fish or similar. Sorry if this sounds crude, but I've read the account of a very experienced aquariast who has used urine to jump start things Wink The point is to add some element into the tank which contains or will generate ammonia as it decays.

I can't tell you how long it would take to cycle a tank this way, but I can say you definitely would not want to change any water during the process. This would only reduce the amount of ammonia present, and slow things down. The only time you would want to change water during the cycle is if there are fish present, and even then, it depends on the load of fish present.
