Hi, for about three months now my tank has been developing a cloudy scum like film on its surface. I do 20% water changes every week and while doing so I try and skim off the scum. I get most of it but it reappears in full force a few days later. It doesn

its protein soup from plant and fish wastes.

Only way to get rid of it if you must is to increase filtration.

A mini hang on the back filter will solve this for you.

Why surface scum appears on one tank, but not on another one that seems to be similar in most other ways is a mystery to me.

Getting rid of it (for a while) is easy: drag a strip of paper towel across, lifting up the front edge as you go. You'll also quickly see whether an element of your surface scum is green algal film.
