Hello

Youngest daughter has developing interest, and would like to start up a tank. She really likes platys, but would like to start a cold water, rather than 'tropical' tank first. One of our local LFS has platys in cold water, labelled Xiphophorus Variatus, and I noticed that the platys in the gallery here are X. Maculatus. How different are these? Are either or both types suitable for cold water along with White Clouds? Grateful, as ever, for any hints from you expert types.

By the way, thanks for all the assistance to date!

Cheers!

I have platys in my pond and can assure you that they can stand both cold water and huge variations in temperature: last week the temp. drop to 7

Why not just get a heater and make the water warm? That's basically the difference between cold water and tropical anyway...

I'm far too cheap for that!

In fact, that's exactly what my wife said today at the LFS, as littleun's room does get very cold in winter (well, for Southern England Smile ) it's probably worth it. Also opens her up to the wider choice of bottom feeders. Thnaks for your suggestions and help, guys (Obrigado, Zeco).

Cheers!
