No. Their behaviour, peronsalities, and agression displays are differnt. On top of that Rift Lakers the needed water parameter are COMPLETELY different. I believe there are at least 3 or 4 other threads in here. For more details you may want to search on that. _________________ "... instead of considering what to say when they write, people now just let thoughts drool out onto the screen," - about e-mail

I am very experianced with african rift lake cichlids and the answer is a definite no. You MAY be able to keep africans with south americans while
they are juvinelles but the americans will take over the aquarium in no time. For new cichlids keepers, I wouldn't go with americans because they tend to be more aggresive. The lake malawi cichlids are easy to keep as long as you have the tank size. _________________ 370 Gallon Marine FO

See, I would totally recommend many american species over most all mbunas. Those malawi attitudes, to me, were much more unforgiving than south americans. However, because of their size, you do have to keep less americans in the same sized tank as you could keep many mbunas. _________________

You can try Kribs with curviceps and/or bolivian rams.
But make sure the tank is big enough with a lot plants(plastic or live)
for swimming away from whoever is dominant.
2 kribs
2 bol rams
2 blue rams
1 curvicep(lord of my tank)
5 dwarf rainbowfish
1 clown pleco
1 talking catfish****clean up boy('',) _________________ pigeonboy |

I have a 29g long and my fish are doing great.
Go for what you like and get what you want.
It's really about personnal preference.
I've tried different kinds of combination and what I have works for me. _________________ pigeonboy |

You could keep a pair of convicts in a 38 gallon, or possibly keyhole cichlids, kribensis (which are West African but act much like the South Americans).
If you are willing to put the time and effort into maintaining water quality, rams, apisto's, angelfish or discus would not be out of the question in that size tank. |

Pet gravel and maybe a heater.
Breeding convicts are brutal. You may be able to luck into a tankmate...but chances are they'll kill anything in there or make life so unpleasant for them that it's not really fair. I've never tried danios with them...do they move fast enough to avoid convict roughness? _________________
