I am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon tank with the intention of raising and breeding Aulonocara nyassae. I plan on getting two males and four females. I have never raised Malawi chichlids before and my reference material is dated. A few questions:

Does my stocking level/ratio sound OK?
How hard is it to get the fish to spawn?
Any tips on raising and breeding these fish?

Best regards,

William

One male, or you will soon have one...
GH and KH should be in the low teens for best success.
Other than that its pretty easy.
Have a 30g ready as a grow out tank for the young and plan to strip the holding females as these fish are fry eaters.

I have no experience with breeding mbunas and your reply got me curious...is it easy to convince the female to give up the young in her mouth, or if threatened will she just swallow? Smile

Sorry Marcos, off on holiday, just got back today.

I have never had a female mbuna or hap type swallow any young.
If you catch females in a net many females will spit their young on ther own. Many mothers will hold even when threatened and may have to be forced to spit the young. (I have even had a female pick young back up in a bucket! )
To force a strip, wet your hands thoroughly, hold the female in one hand and with the other gently (and I mean gently) squeeze her cheeks under water and the fry will swim/ fall out.
The skin if the female will be irritated so a slime coat addtive is helpful at this point in time (I am of the opinion that stress coat at any other time is unecessary).

Forced stripping is not my prefered method... its always best if you can put the female into her own tank to spit when ready.
