I'm building a sump filter for a freshwater tank and trying to find the best biological filter media. They sell bags of red lava rock in home supply stores. The rocks seem to have massive amounts of rough surface area that the bacteria could grow on. This seems too good to be true.... I saw a warning somewhere that red lava rock ordaments May alter pH. I suppose I could buy a bag and stick some in water and watch for a pH change but does anyone know before I have to do that?

Not an expert here, but I have also read that lava rock develops anaerobic areas within. I haven't heard about pH change. Here is a discussion about the subject

You might want to do a little more research first.
