Are goldfish chasing each other around the pond a sign of breeding, or just pestering?

How do you tell a koi from a goldfish? I have just inherited two fish from my mum, one a goldfish about 8-9 inches and the other a gold and white one about ten inches. Could these be koi?

Ta

Goldfish do chase each other when they're getting ready to spawn. And the closer they get to spawning the males chase the females even more aggressively. But, goldfish are playful, too. Can you see tubercles on the gills?

Koi have whiskers and goldfish don't.

can't see anything on the gills. What do they look like?

Think the two big ones must be goldfish, haven't noticed whiskers. Didin't know goldfish grew to more than a couple of inches. How big can they get?

Tubercles look like white bumps. Goldfish can grow to be around a foot long and sometimes even larger, depending on the type. Here's a site with good info about goldies and shows some of the different types Animal Soup. I can't directly link you to the page.
