I am thinking of removing my UGF in my 55 gallon. I thought that gravel breaks down watse and it turns into good bacteria stored under the UGF? Isn't this so? If you just leave gravel in wht is the process then? Thanks.

In referance to Saltwater they aren't a very good filtration device. They build of nitrates which is harmful to Saltwater inverts and fish.

A good 2-3 inch Agronite/livesand sandbed is my recommendation.

I use them all the time in non-planted, non-reef tanks.
They work fine in fish-only tanks, and since such tanks need more maintenance anyway, they have no real impact in that regard.

TomGriffin.com has some great articles on filtration, several by RTR, one of my favorites. Do a bit of reading there and you'll learn quite a lot.
