hi all. I just remembered that I saw the lighing on this reef tank at the aquarium. the tank must have been 400g plus. It had softys spses polyps mushrooms and all the cool stuff. I was looking at the lighting and I saw "maximum 475watts" how were they able to keep all those spses and softys under only 950watts? are mhes that good that you only need about 2watts per gallon?

Watts per gallon really is relative to the tank. Its a nice way for somebody to break down what you might need for that tank.

2-400 watt MH bulbs will light just about any tank under 4 feet deep and keep corals alive. I'm not sure of that tank's dimensions but I assume its in the 3 foot deep area. If you put 900 watts of Power compact lighting over a 400 gallon tank you'd do just fine. Then again that would be more expensive than the MH lights and take 10 bulbs.

People use MH for a lot of power in just one bulb. They also give a nice shimmer to the water.
