You know, plenum & Berlin hybrids work quite well.

Heavy skimming to remove wastes and a ( shallow, since it has a plenum ) live sand bed to process what remains.. what's not to love?

Have you looked into the new Ecosystem Method? If you haven't gotten started yet, and you want to have the most successful tank possible, consider the miracle of miracle mud. In side-by-side comparison, the Ecosystem tank blew away a Berlin tank in every way. The experiment was set up to discredit the Ecosystem and demonstrate the superiority of the Berlin method, but the opposite turned out to be true, and in a big way.

well I might be too late but have you heard of the deep sand bed method? it is a heavy layer of sand , quite thick, 4" I think any way it is in replace of the berlin or the plenium. there is a good article about it in I think Tropical Fish Hobbyist. thought I would try to help.
