Il be using some type of filter pad (eheim make one) or filter wool.

I just found Fender's website:

That design is basically what mine will look like except with bioballs and probably a filter pad at the bottom.

I'm sure the maxi jet 600 is fine. I changed my rio 180 to a rio 600 because the rio 180 does nothing just like it says on that Fender site, I used a very similar design too but didn't read it properly so ended up going through his mistakes eheh but now all it good I think. One thing, how big are the bio balls meant to be? I have a feeling mine are way too big. They're the nearly as wide as the gravel cleaner. You can see it in my post in the photo album.
