Hey Davidk,
Sorry to here about your fish. Don't kick yourself too hard.
Even though we are supposed to be the species with the big noggin I always feel that we know so little about the inner workings of fish and other aquatic species. They are reacting to water parameters, food quality, temps, tankmates, stress and disease or disorders. Sometimes all at once! The important thing is to learn from each incident and move forward.
Recently I lost three F/W clams, one after the other, and I couldn't figure out why. The tank is a stable mature tank that hadn't undergone any big changes, water parameters were the same as usual. After a lot of thought I think the cause was the shift from winter to spring and the warmer ambient temps. In my drafty house the winter temps fluxed from 76 - 78 but now the tank is 78 - 80. Maybe the slight increase was enough to put them over the edge? That's just my guess (could be old age?) but it illustrates how some obscure thing may affect our best efforts at fishkeeping.
Anyways, enough about me.
For something "easy" how about S/W seahorses Wink
Good luck with your tank.
