Journalists are a great source, I can tell you. Only they can take a wonderful and informative scientific article like this one on the phenomena of Cichlid Speciation in Rift Lakes (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader):

http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Publications/Documents/IR-97-072.pdf

and turn it into something like this one (pay special attention to the first "African Cichlid" portrayed Rolling Eyes)

http://www.reshafim.org.il/fishfarm/ns-article.htm

But anyway, the topic is really interesting...I always wondered why there were so many cichlid species compared to other groups, now I know Wink

Reminds me of a book someone gave me, The Idiot's Guide to Tropical Fish or something like that. Not a bad beginner's text, all in all, except the writers clearly weren't responsible for the photos or the captions ... not only were the colors way off and in odd ways (bright green Sailfin molly, etc) but guess what fish was filed under Brackish in the photo section? Yup - Discus.

Oh, come on, I can see how a discus could easily be confused with a scat or a mono
Rolling Eyes

Thank god the second article didn't try to get into nomeclature...

Maybe we could offer up an editorial/fact checking service here

Shocked I've never kept cichlids (except for my new bolivian rams), but even I was amazed...it's almost funny...
