I was given a tank and I woulkd say its around 40 to 55 gallons, So I went to the pet store and bought 6 balas and 2 algae eaters. Do you guys think thats to many balas for a that size of a tank???? Please help first time with Aquarium!

Also whats the best food to buy for them, when I bought mine the lady at the pet store said they could eat the fish flakes and they would be fine????

Also I've noticed at night time they will kinda all just get at the bottom of the tank and do a little twich motion in the same place over and over anyone no what thats about????

I think you need a really bigger tank for your bala's group, thet're very active and can reach to 12"-14" and need enough space to swim...

They accept most foods, meaty and veggie ones,I fed my bala sharks cow' liver, tubifex cubs, vitamin tablets,flakes,granulars,lettuce...

You will find out in about 2 years time when your Balas are over 30cms long and at least 12 cms high each!

They do get quite big... regardless of tank size Smile

The prime sized tank for a full grow bala is 125g or higher.

The pet shop is right in telling you that they won't get large in a small tank, but what they aren't telling you is that being kept in an inappropriately small tank will kill the fish slowly. Fish emit a hormone into tank water which controls growth, in a smaller tank the over abundance of the hormone causes the fishes external growth to shut down. The problem arises because while the outside of the fish stops growing, the inside of the fish does not stop growing, leading to 'impacted' organs and a slow, miserable death. This is known as stunting and is one of the most severe problems with Balas in particular (since they are sold to folks as safe for aquariums much smaller than the size the truly need).

So, that taken into account, I would recommend you avoid the Balas. In a 45 to 50 gallon you have plenty of safe and fascinating stocking options.
