I just bought some Red Tailed Sharks for my tank. They eat some of the flakes I put in at feeding time, but I almost always notice them eating the algae from the fake plants, on my decorations, and even nibbling on a few of my real plants.

My question is could they live off of what is in the tank like the algae and little plants I have? Or do I need to make sure they get enough flakes? Also does it hurt if they nibble the algae off of the plastic plants? Not the plastic plant itself, but the algae on it.

What size tank are the Red-Tailed Sharks in, because Red-Tailed sharks are territorial and if there are more than one they will usually fight. For feeding them you should use Algae Wafers or sinking pellets.

They won't live on the algae alone. yes they need the flake food, I also give mine some brine shrimp.

I would suggest taking all the sharks back except for 1.

Red Tail Sharks do not like to be kept with its own kind. It will end up with all but 1 dead. I would suggest reading up on the RTS in the gallery here.
