That would put you right at the edge of a low light tank. Provided you have some sort of reflectors. _________________ www.rexgrigg.com

What type of bulbs are they? You have 2 watts per gallon, so that is just above a low light tank. For low light plants you could have Anarcharis, Java Fern, and Java Moss just to name a few. _________________ Life is better with fish

Hold on. You are using incandescent bulbs? Then you have NO light tank. The WPG formula is based on florescent bulbs. _________________ www.rexgrigg.com

The only thing incandescent bulbs do is warm the water a little. For a low light tank which is 1.5-2 watts per gallon you would need about a minimum of 60 watts of either Fluorescent or power compact fluorescent. Also whats the length of you 40 gallon because you could order a light strip from bigalsonline.com or liveaquaria.com for you tank. _________________ Life is better with fish

I think that it may be unfair to say that low light is no less than 1.5 wpg. Makes it sound like if you don't have 1.5 wpg you won't be able to grow anything. I have a 12 gallon tank with a 13 watt bulb in my tank which makes it less than 1.5 wpg. I have had wonderful success in growing low light plants. I have Anacharis, Anubias Nana, Cobomba, Money Wart and Java Fern. The Anubias just bloomed and the Java Fern is propagating like mad, I am constantly having to cut back the anacharis and cobomba. It is a low light, low tech (no CO2 or additives or anything) tank. So it is definitely do-able with the right plants! Just my 2 cents! Hope it helps!! |
