I have a sponge filter (size is for a 20 gallon tank, according to the lit that came with it) powered by a 20-gallon air pump, for my 10 gallon kuhli loach tank, which is planted. The filter works great....save that is has managed to suck ALL of my duckweed up!

Do all sponge filters do this?

Have you tried reducing the airflow through the sponge. Doing this may reduce the amount of suction the filter has.
