They're two different species, Pterophyllum scalare and P. altum. P. altum is much less common and has been bred only a few times in captivity (though that's changing) unlike P. scalare, which is probably spawned a few times a day worldwide and is much more cheap and available.

Are they both the same in terms of temperment and how to take care of them?

Shuhsien ,

Altum angelfish are much larger than their scalare counterparts , in the wild where most of them are caught (Venezuela , Colombia) they reach sizes up to 20 in which includes fins (nature/wild).The altum can also be seen having an indented snout , smaller scale patterns on their bodies , and often a reddish striped pattern.Scalare angelfish are not as tall as altums ( in nature/wild) , don't have the familiar indented snout , have different scale patterns which don't include the disinct stripe pattern and are found in areas close to where altums live but include Brazil, Peru, Guyana , and the lower amazon.Altum angels are also more expensive and are in demand from most angel breeders.Water temperature for these two species should be in the 77-85 F (86 F being the highest) range for them to be happy along with a pH range at about 7 ( altums) and 8 (scalare).

Its so rare to find or see altums here in Canada. If I ever do find some ,its
a purchase for sure !

Also, the industry has seen a bad trend where people are slapping the name 'altum' on things that are not the true altum species. I've seen a LOT of silver angelfish mislabeled recently that is making the problem much worse. If you can't tell the difference between something labled altum and a silver angelfish you may not be looking at a real altum and the inflated price should certainly be avoided.

I'd only recommend altums to very experienced fishkeepers because of their cost and the fact they usually come in wild (and may bring with them diesease.) They are more finicky than most of the tried and true strains of angels in the hobby. Angels can be an excellent beginners cichlid.
