I beleive the males are brighter colored in comparison to the females and the dorsal fin is pointy at the rear. The female will be plainer in color and will have a rounded dorsal fin.

If I am correct I believe that male gourami species have the dorsal fin reach the rear fin. (forget what it is called) The females have it reach only about half way. Hope that I helped.

Dwarf gourami females are seldom seen in fish stores as the males have all the color. But if you happen to spot a greyish looking dwarf mixed in you may have yourself a female.
