Hello again all,

I am geting little holes in all the leaves of my java ferns.

Quick question. What is thisusually a sign of, coud it be from the pleco I have in my tank or from the snails? Or maybe a malnutrition problem?

if the holes are round it could be your snails. but if it's not, maybe you need to re-fertilize your substrate.

I have heard that Plecos sometimes eat plants and sometimes don't. How big is your tank, and what do you have in it?

Could be snails or the Pleco. It could be a nutrient shortage but without knowing your dosing schedule it's hard to say.

Insufficient data input for meaningful answer.

the tanks is about a 15 gallons I believe.

It contains 12 zebra danios and 22 cardinal tetras and the pleco. (small, about 2 inches) Yes I know I am carrying a rather heavy Bioload right now. But since it is just a pure schooling tank I can get away with it. I am running a whisper 20 and an aquaclear 200. The substrate should be OK. Its flourite 40% laterite 40% and gravel about 20% which was laid down last year.

The holes are forming in the middle of the leaves more than anything and it has been running rampant through the tank as of late. I've been rather slacking in my keeping due to finals and the complexity of life but I am trying to get back on the ball. I have to run an iron test ASAP to test for the trace elements.

The ferns originally spread like wildfire and still are. butnow this swiss cheese like plague has been spreading. I remember reading something about java ferns sort of melting down and then regrowing after awhile. OK.. So its been a long day at work and I'm exhausted so excuse the lack of coherrentness in this post. =P

When I had snails I had the same symptons but when the snails died the sympton stopped. From this experience I can say definitely snails
