Hi everyone, this is my very first post here Smile

I've never kept fish before, and I have a 15 gallon tank that I'm trying to set up. I got some blue and black colored gravel, and I read that I need to rinse it until the rinse water runs clear. Well, after five or six rinses, that still isn't happening. I stir it around in a colander over a bucket. Some of the bits of gravel are losing their paint. So I'm wondering, is it okay to just put the gravel in the tank now? My boyfriend thinks that I'm simply scraping off more paint by washing it more, but I worry that dye may pollute the water and harm my fish.

If the gravel has paint on it, it might not be the best to use. What brand of gravel is it? Did you get it a pet store or somewhere else?

It's aquarium gravel from a pet store, "Pure Water Pebbles" made by World Wide Imports Ent., Inc.

I had the same problem with blue gravel. Eventually the water in the tank had a blue tint also. I scrapped that stuff and went with natural colored rocks.

If the paint is coming off, then that should be enough (it is after all painted pebbles, the idea is to keep the paint on Smile).

It'll be cloudy for a day or two then it'll clear up as it settles - Painted pebbles will fade over time to a pasty colour (which don't look very inviting).

If possible, stick to natural river gravels (not painted).
