I have a 55 gallon with 4 convicts in their. If so what do I need to set it on?

Yes, absolutely, unless you live in a very temperate area (of course, the summer heat might keep it close depending upon where you are). Keep the temp around 76 degrees farenheit (or 25 celcius)

I would keep them above 68 or so. While most houses are within that range, it tends to fluctuate at night, so if nothing else, a heater is good for minimizing that.

Not that I think a convict wouldnt survive, but they will be healthier at a warmer, more stable temp.

you might want a titanium one. Convicts swim very fast when hungry and They have broke both my cheap hagen glass heaters. I bought a Viva Aqua heater and that things great unbreakable. The one thing to worry about is the heater holders during a water chand the heater may melt the plastic.

The new visetherm stealth is a good acurate heater. Its a plastic coated aluminum heater, unbreakable. Costs same as regular visetherm glass heaters. www.petsmart.com under $20. 25 to 250 watts.
