I am wanting to put some Java ferns, and possibly some other plants into a tank with ghost shrimp, possibly a betta, 3 loaches, and maybe some tetras.

Any suggestions, as far as prepping the tank, and what plants work best?

I want plants that will provide cover for the shrimp, and other smaller fish, as well as be astetically appealing.

Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

It depends on the size of your tank, and how much effort you are willing to spend each week (I.e. in high light tanks, you will have high maintenances).

It also depends on the amount of lighting that you have. If you are wanting to a go a low-tech, low-light setup, then Java Ferns, Anubias, Java Moss, and Hornwort are all good candidates for a low light setup

Preferably low light, lower maintinence, until I know I can handle it well.

Then you'd probably want to go with the list that I provided above.

On top of that, I'm not sure how big your aquarium is, but if you plan to have 3 loaches (what kind? I know clown loaches require big aquariums to be happy, as I have 3 in a 90g right now Smile), some of them may or may not dig up your plants, depending on their "mood"

I have a 12 gallon, low light, low tech planted aquarium and so far I have the following plants:
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
Moneywort (Bacopa Monnieri)
Anacharis (Egeria Densa)
Dwarf Anubias (Anubias Nana)
Cabomba (Cabomba Caroliniana)

All of which are doing great in my tank! I cut back the Anacharis and Cabomba every couple weeks or so when I do a water change. But other than that the plants require very little work. Hope that helps!
