Wouldn't the easiest solution be, add an extention to the existing intake tube, to take the opening well below the water line? Your filter will then continue to siphon water and filter function remain normal just at a lesser rate. Extention tubes are a couple bucks and sold everywhere.

Sounds to me that the intake tube is to short to begin with? I would have to drain 75% of my tank to get below intake tubes!

Hey!! that sounds like a plan. THe tube is pretty long, but in the middle there is lever thingy with little holes....so when the water level passes that, it stops sucking water...
I will look for those extensions....

This is a penguin filter with a black intake tube? Where are the holes in the middle of intake tube? Tube should be solid until syphon screen at bottom?

I don't believe there should be any holes in middle? I'm lookin at a catologue and I don't see any lever thingys or holes in middle of intake tubes on any models shown? Is your intake tube damaged?

Extention tubes are available at www.DrsFosterSmith.com for penguins. $2.39 for models 110, 125 ,160, and 170 - and $2.99 for models 300 and 330

Even with an extension tube, my Penguin 330 will lose prime when the water level gets 3" below the joint where the extension is attached.

Sounds like an extention may not be your answer then. I use Aquaclear filters and they will draw water well past the extentions joints. I use three extentions on my 100 gallon and my 55 gallon. I have used four on an extra deep tank with same results. Have to remove 50-60% or more of the water before they stop. Sorry to mis-lead you, I based my experience using other HOB's not thinking their would be such a difference between the two?

I did have and use a penguin mini before this model included a bio wheel, back when the dinasours roamed, and did not incounter this problem.

THank you all for your suggestions and inputs....
I will just stick to my normal WC's....
I just wanted to see if there was any way I could get around the pest of pouring water in the filter after I was done.
thanks though! Rolling Eyes
