Most American cichlids tend to need a pH between 6.5-7.5, and do not need the high pH that other cichlids need.

I have playsand in my green terror tank and it seems to be working out very well plus it was a 10th of the price of the pet store stuff.

Regular sand works fine. Smile I've got 50 pounds of it in my 30g brichardi tank and they LOVE to dig in it. I made the mistake of getting the coarse kind which doesn't look as nice as play sand. I may decide to replace the top layer when I move. Just make sure the play sand doesn't have any caking agents.

caking agents make the sand clump up. I makes it look really ugly and may interfere with the fish's health by clogging the gills when digging, but that's just a speculation.

Just go to your local Home Depot, Lowes or any other type hardware store that sells construction materials. You'll see many different types of bags of sand, there will be also sand all over the place. *gryn* At least you can see what it looks like without opening up a bag. The play sand will be fairly fine and white. If the bag doesn't state there are any additives, then you should be fine.
