I want to have a go - have plants grow in my african cichlid tank.
so far I've only left some val. sp but its growing well and untouched and I have lateriene in the gravel itself and I want to grow other stuff.
they don't dig too much but I've been wondering what to put in
I've seen a planted african cichlid tank in the tank of the month bit and I want to get, if not to that level.... to a decent standard.
so any non seriously-expenisve hardwater plants please

If that's what your looking for you'll love this tank:

Java fern and moss should work. Maybe some aniubus might work too. My cichlids didn't eat my Elodea (Egeria Densa), but they would dig them up.

There's the one I made... 10g lower light setup.

In the high pH , GH and KH universe, algae is a major issue.
I am struggling with algae in with rift lake cichlids.
Good luck

that 10g tank had two sets of lights.
1st it had two screw in spiral 15w daylight bulbs.
I replaced those with a 36w CF light fixture.
DIY CO2, 1 2l bottle running to a hagen ladder.

Tang Shell dwellers.
Fluorite substrate under the plants, sand in front for the shellies.

anubias, crypts, thin leafed swords, ambulla, and the red plant was scarlet hygro.
I say was as all the plants are in a bucket and I moved all the shellies to a 20g this week. The 10g was getting overrun with shellies! LOL

It can be done, its just an uphill battle! LOL

Great looking tank. I imagine with africans your not using CO2?
I ask because thinking of doing same with some high pH plants and ofcourse don't want to use pH lowering Co2.
Thanks.

Luis, those are wild caught Tanginykans with DIY CO2. pH drops to around 7.4 withthe CO2 injection.

Alone, pH is not a concern with rift lake fish. Your KH, GH and pH should be set for the fish you want to keep. Once it is set and stable, then you can inject CO2 without concern as it will not affect the fish at all.

Wow I would never have thought wild caught could prosper at such a low pH. I know captive bred in farms, tanks could.
How long have you had the wild caughts at that pH and how are they doing?
I keep a native fish tank non planted and a tropical planted but reading on African cichlids as I want to try a 75 gallon planted probably with Julie transcriptus or yellow labs.

1 year, the WCs are fantastic and their F1 children have reached breeding size. Hoping for some F2s now.

Like I said, it is your KH, GH and pH prior to CO2 injection that is a concern not pH measured alone.

I have kept F1 in a low pH tank for 5 years till I gave them to a friend so I know 1 year is not long, but there is no evidence of anything less than thriving, plus the F1s were great for far longer. HTH
