I know this sounds like a stupid question but... I have always not really bothered cleaning my gravel, but now that my Undergravel filter is gone the tank is a bit of a mess...So was wondering how to gravel clean without disturbing the roots of my carpet of chain swords....

You don't really vacuum the gravel, what you do is hover the gravel vacuum above the gravel and let it suck all the waste that is on the plants and underneath them. The rest will sink into the gravel and make good plant fertiliser.
