I have noticed some spots in the substrate turning brown. I wanted to know if that is normal within the cycling period?

probably diatom algae, shows up a lot in new tanks... I know in fresh water my ghost shrimp seemed to love it... don't know about saltwater though... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

It should subside as silicates deplete, a normal progression of a new tank maturing. Next comes hair algae and cyano... _________________ Kieron Dodds

"Throwing" anything in to a SW tank on a whim is generally not a practice that will make you successful. In this case, adding Live Rock is warranted at this stage (and could have been done sooner), so you're okay to add it. But, there's also more to LR than bio-filtration. Reef fish NEED a "reef structure" of sorts to be comfortable with their surroundings and avoid ppotential stress that could lead to disease. So, LR is really not an option in tanks containing reef fishes as much as it is a necessity. It's the sentiment of throwing things in without a complete understanding of the effects they have that is the danger here. I would suggest, rather than spending a couple of hundred on LR, that you use half LR and half Base Rock, and invest the difference in a few good books. _________________ Kieron Dodds

and pray the live rock is "cured" and doesn't come w/ a mantis shrimp or everything in your tank will be: a. eaten or b. bulldozed... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

yea I went to the LFS and they said that it was "cured" and ready to go.. Kudfos thanks for the kind words. I most def need to make it more comfortabale for the clowns I want to throw in there. Thinking of your previous suggestion and making it a nano reef. Only prob I am seeing is the light since I only have the 18" 15watt hood..
oh well back to the drawing board!
Rob
edit are there any differences and when I mean difference I mean benifical difference in live rock from Figi, Hiatian, Florida, etc? I was looking at different sites and saw there were different kinds. I beleive the LFS has Fiji. |
