10x tank volume per hour... hmmmm... I've got a drilled 65 gallong w/ an overflow that's rated at a max of 600 gph, I was going to put a mag 5 in the sump, that's only 7.7x per hour... am I in trouble? _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

will you have powerheads in this setup? I think that tank turnover takes pH's into account along with your filter flow rate. how is your baby looking? |

my baby? if you mean my tank, , she looks empty...
yes, I'll have 2 powerheads in there running at different times of the day (similar to tides w/ one pushing water 1 direction for 6 hrs and the other pushing water in the opposite direction (or close to it) for 6 hrs... those phs are rated at around 150 gph... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

Well, for FO, if you keep your bio-load low and have relatively sedate species without the higher metabolic requirements of more active species, you can cut corners (a little) on flow. But, IMO, it's a really important part of ANY system and cheap enough to manage (as opposed to, say, upgrading to a chiller or MH lighting) that there's no real reason NOT to get your flow up to 10x or beyond. With the PHs, which absolutely count, and are often better than some in-sump pumps due to NO head, I think you'll be fine. _________________ Kieron Dodds

excellent, thanks for the info! I'll post a few pics when the tank is up and running, I'm going to build a custom stand and top for it, so it might be a while... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

LOL, check out my 450 thread on TR... even when you have a professional custom built, it can still take quite some time. _________________ Kieron Dodds

Kdodds,
I just finished wiring my basement, I've got a hybrid 10" 1.75hp JET table saw w/ its own 20 amp line... it's a beauty, and it weighs 330lbs!!! I've already built acouple of desks for the shop, so I can't wait to get started on my stand, I just promised my wife I'd build some end tables and an armoire (sp?) first... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

Just tell her you need the practice before delving into such a beautiful project as an armoire... maybe she'll buy it. _________________ Kieron Dodds

I feel guilty for quasi-hijacking this thread...
so I'll just say... already tried that, she's seen too much of my other work to buy it though... _________________ 20g planted - 1.5 wpg - pea gravel/sand/laterite - DIY co2 |

Freya, greetings in Croatia, your english is fine.
Do you have access to a good local marine fish store, live rock/live sand/powerheads? _________________ Keepin' marines happy for 25 years |
