You need to leave about 10 inches of extra space so the hoses don't kink. I have 2 XP3s and the space under my tank is 30 inches.

No problem. I wanted to leave the original hose length intact in case I needed to alter the initial placement of the filters. Even in the 30inch space from the floor of the enclosed stand to the opening in the back area it took some rearranging to keep the hoses unkinked. Of course if you want to shorten the hoses to closer to thhe actual length needed this isnt as much of an issue. Making your own stand is ideal , and if the tank is large you want to get it right the first time! My stand is 80 inches long for a 120 gal tank and with the canopy is as tall as it is long. Its actually a wall so to speak between the kitchen and living room! Good luck on your construction!!
