This is actually more of a question to prove to a friend of a friend why he needs to do water changes.

He's had this 90 gal. up and running for a month or so, live sand, live rock - I believe 30-40 lbs.. He has one damsel left over from cycling, added a 6-8 inch lionfish, waited about 2 weeks and added a 6-8 inch harlequin tusk and now he has a 12 inch snowflake eel.

He says that his nitrates are at 20 and asked how he can get them back down to 10 and I told him to do a water change - which he didn't seem too enthusiastic to do. He loses about 2 gallons per week to evaporation and believes that topping his water off is good enough for a water change. To my knowledge he hasn't done a single change since he's had the tank.

He's also adding an entire capful of Prime, which is good for 50 gallons, to only 2 gallons of water, is there any harm in that?

So any answers with explanations to them will be helpful in trying to convince him that he needs to be doing "__% change per ____" and "why" will be greatly appreciated.

I would be doing a 10g water change weekly on a tank that size with those inhabitants.

I asked a question involving doseing with prime instead of doing water changes way back when I was a newb. I will try to see if it still exists.

Try to explain to the guy that if he tops of with freshwater because the salt doesn't evaporate then why should detrius and other by products evaporate.

I hope he has a 90 gallon refugium and protein skimmer to go along with that. Rolling Eyes

He does have a protein skimmer and refugium as far as I know (never seen his set-up) but I'm not sure as to how many gallons it is.

Just for the record, my 180 is 3 years old, and uses a DSB and LR in conjuction with a high flow rate for primary filtration. I use an algal refugium and skimmer for nutrient export. I have never had to do a water change to reduce nitrAte or phosphate in that time, even with a large fish bio-load. And yes, it's a reef.
