not a beginner species

it's a juvenile right now, but in a few years, it's going to out grow that tank... it's a very difficult keeper too, very aggresive during mating, etc... They've also been known to turn on their owners...

I hear the their feeding habits are a bit tricky. Don't even think about what type of gravel pump you would need to clean up the waste!!! Shocked

they can be very picky eaters, but the old addage (sp?) that they'll keep eating and eating 'till there's no more food def. holds true!

Some very expeirienced keepers have been known to keep more than one together, but usually a school of 4 or more is suggested to even out aggression. My friend just got a small one, I've been trying to tell her how much trouble it will cause though in her small community tank. I read somewhere that this is one of the few fish that can spawn on land. Can anyone validate this?

Speaking strictly from personal experience, I can assure you that they can breed on land. Very Happy

Also, it is interesting to note that they are one of the few out there that can function in both marine and freshwater, but generally has a higher success rate for extended periods in freshwater.

Another up shot is that they will eat virtually anthing...

That is the first fish I have seen wearing shorts Confused
I have three of those things. Like a lot of species they are cute when they are juvenile but not so as they age. Eventually I needed to get each one it's own tank... AND THE SMELL Shocked

I keep just a solitude specimen at the moment. While still just a young juvinale it is quickly learning it's environment and happy to spend time with it's parents. Easily make a mess, tank buster is a good work. He has a tendency to pick up the decor of the habitat move it and pound it on the glass. I've seen him rip up on the plants as well. Pulling tops right off.

Mine prefers fresh water. Swimming as much as possible and time will allow. I commend 4-5 feedings a day when small. Reduced to 3 main meals as they get older. Daily cleaning are nessecary. When young may need frequent waste cleanings througout the day.

Good luck with yours. Make sure you do your research before picking one of these up.

Just wait until they are fully grown, then all they do is hang around in one spot, and want, want and more want. And don't even think about when they get sick, as all you want to do is get rid of it. Twisted Evil
