Are you supposed to use carbon in your filtering systems, or not?

In my opinion, activated carbon can be highly over rated and over used in many marine fish systems. Many use it with success, but it's exhausted quickly. While certainly beneficial for removing/adsorbing at molecular levels various yellowing pollutants/agents and various medications, metals, copper, etc., IMO carbon can also strip the water so much that it interferes with the slime coat of the fish. I have no basis or data other than my own experience; which includes observing HLLE appear overnight under its use. I would reserve carbon for only occasional water polishing as needed; and even then, in very small quantities. Investing in a good skimmer for removal of dissolved organics is another option.
