I've got a fairly new tank and have started to add the Kent calcium, Iodine, and S&M liquid treatments to the water. Calcium everyday, Iodine once a week, and S&M every four days as it says to do on the bottle. I don't know if this is normal but ever since I have started adding this suppliments, the substrate and the LR has started turning a brown colour, I have been vaccuming the substrate about every 3rd day to get rid of it. I'm new to the SW game so sorry if any of this sounds bad, or if I'm over reacting. Any input on this would be appreciated, thanks a lot. BTW I've got a All-Glass Compact Fluorescent Strip Light- 36" 110Watt , Red Sea Prizm Deluxe Hang-On Skimmer, Marineland Emperor Bio-Wheel 280 Power Filter if this helps.

I feel your pain, but this need not be a disaster.
Plenty of diatom/cyano discussion here:

exactly how new is your tank. still cycling new or just cycled new? I would have thought you would want to start adding those supplements once you have corals in your tank. also make sure your skimmer is working correctly and you have bubbles coming over into the wast collection cup (but not to fast) I have a normal prism and I modify the intake speed once a week to keep it perfect.

cheers

andrew

Its been cycling for about 2 1/2 months, I added fish to it about a month ago, and all my levels are perfect, so I guess the cycling period is over. I am not adding corals to this tank, just fish and LR, but I was told that these suppliments will do the LR good. As for the prism, how often do you think I should be emptying it? Thanks

you should be emtying the waste collection area when it is full. at a perfect rate the collection cup should be fulll of coloured water(usually green or brownish) that smells bad(rotting organic matter).

Alright after many hours of reading and testing I've narrowed it down and it has to be my water that is causing this. Right now I am filling up a bucket (tap water) and putting a conditioner in it and leaving it for a couple days before I put it in my tank. This must not be good enough. I need RO water I guess but I do not have access to it nor can I aford to buy one, is there any other options? Britta filter, buying "Filtered spring" water from the store in the big jugs etc.... Thanks

if you have a good skimmer ro water shouldn't be neccesary. are you sure your skimmer is set properly to allow for maximum efficientcy?

The skimmer is set up correctly, I'm adjusting it quite often too to keep it in the sweet spot. I'm still having this problem though.... If I can fix it in a few weeks I think I may have to give the fish away as with school I can not afford to spend all this time I am right now on them. Sad, the fish are really happy, just this stupid brown stuff...Sad

I see you got your nutrients under control. and your skimmer is probably to blame for that. its good that you don't have to give up the hobby, best of luck
